The blood cries of gaulish fanatics, the ordered march of Roman Legions and the earth quaking charge of medieval knights, what’s not to like in ancient wargaming?
Warlords has a long-established tradition of ancient wargaming, and has a world-class DBMM scene with games every meeting and frequent tournaments run by members.
Of course if massed ranks isn’t your thing, skirmish games such as SAGA are regularly played as well, whatever your time period or preferred model count you’ll probably find like-minded souls at Warlords.
While we don’t play every game all the time or to the same frequency, these are games that many of our members like.

SAGA is a skirmish-scale tabletop wargame system created by Studio Tomahawk, originally launched in 2011 and still hugely popular in clubs worldwide. It focuses on small warbands (typically 4–12 points, around 25–50 models) in historical, Dark Ages, and fantasy settings, where each faction is controlled via a unique Battle Board — a player mat with abilities, reactions, and special rules that you activate by placing dice. The core mechanic revolves around generating and spending Saga dice (rolled each turn based on your units) to trigger these abilities, creating a highly tactical, asymmetric game where positioning, fatigue management, and clever dice use often decide battles rather than sheer numbers. Games are fast (45–90 minutes), narrative-driven, and emphasize heroic deeds, unit synergy, and dramatic moments.
What sets SAGA apart is its elegant simplicity combined with deep faction flavour: each army feels distinctly different thanks to its dedicated Battle Board, encouraging creative playstyles (e.g., aggressive Viking charges vs. defensive Anglo-Saxon shield walls). It supports linked campaigns with warband progression, experience, and storyline events.
Expansions & Variants (main ones as of now):
Age of Invasions (original core) — Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Normans, Welsh, etc.
Age of Ancients — Adds biblical/early historical factions (e.g., Romans, Gauls, Carthaginians).
Age of Crusades — Crusaders, Saracens, Byzantines, steppe nomads.
Age of Magic (fantasy expansion) — Undead, Orcs, Great Kingdoms, Lords of the Wild, etc., with monsters, magic dice, and epic creatures.
Age of Hannibal — Focuses on Punic Wars era (Carthage, Rome, Greeks).
Eternal Champions and supplements — More historical periods and cross-compatibilities.
SAGA: Book of Battles and scenario books — Add varied missions and campaign rules.
The system has stayed relevant through constant support, community scenarios, and easy house-ruling, making it ideal for clubs that want quick, flavorful games without massive armies. Many players love it as a "thinking man's skirmish" — less dice-rolling chaos than some systems, more chess-like strategy with a heroic twist.
